White man beaten because he's dating a black woman

At Ellis Square, in Savannah, Georgia a white man was jumped by a group of black men and beat up because his girlfriend, who he was with at the time, is African American.

A Georgia man was left bloodied and bruised after he was brutally attacked for dating an African-American girl.

The interracial couple were strolling through Ellis Square, a public space in Savannah, shortly before midnight last Friday, when they say three black men began taunting them.

The provocation began as racial slurs, then the scoffers started blowing kisses and suddenly the trio jumped the boyfriend, Andrew Quade - who is white, beating him and leaving him barely conscious.

The violent response to the mixed-race romance has left the couple in shock that such vicious intolerance still exists.

'This shouldn't happen in this day in age. I know we're in the South and all that, but it's time for a change,' the girlfriend, Olufisayo Bakre, told WTOC-TV news.

The couple say they were simply minding their own business as they walked through the Savannah spot, one of the busiest squares in the historic downtown, known for being the epitome of Southern charm.

Then the group targeted the couple.

'One of them was making racial comments at us and one of the them was blowing kisses. It was a very aggravating situation to be in,' Bakre explained.

I do not disagree that racism is still alive and well in Savannah as well as Los Angeles, Dallas Detroit st Louis New York or any city in the world for that matter and we should fight it as hard as we can however you are not reporting the facts accurately the police have released tape from the incident in Ellis Square and the couple in question did have the option of leaving instead the victim of this act of hatred escalated the incident not once but twice I am not blaming him simply stating that they had other options and at around midnight when people have been drinking is not the best time to assert your right to who you love. I pray for his quick recovery and feel his pain I have been a victim myself of this type of insanity and it does shake you to your core that we still live in this kind of world but we do we must on both sides exercise more tolerance yes the taunts and the vulgarity that we may have to endure cost us self esteem but the possibility of loosing our lives in the balance not worth it. Poor judgment was used there where 3 guys this man approached not once but twice.

I am appalled that something like this could still happen being that this is the 21 century and we have come such a long way. Sometimes we are so consumed by our lives and our surroundings that we fail to notice that racist outburst like this are still current in our society. To think that people are so ignorant and uneducated to beat someone up up by simply the color of their skin in appalling. I’m disgusted that things like this still even happen because it states that we as a society are not advancing morally.

Wow, I cannot believe this. It is disturbing to see that racism still exist. Come on, we have a president who is descendant from Africa. This is just shameful! We need to be more aware of this and get the courage to stop ignorant individuals. I hope that he recovers quickly and that their relationship keeps going strong.

This is ridiculous, I cannot believe how this can still happen. We are so far beyond such kinds of actions. Even our president is black, for someone to do that is just ignorant and shameful! one is allowed to date anyone they want and a color of someone skin shouldnt have anything to do with them or a problem.

I was shocked after watching this video. I understand that racism is still in existence. However, I can’t believe physical violence was used against another person due to hatred toward an interracial couple. In today’s society there are so many people intermingling despite race and ethnicity. The United States has numerous ethnic and racial groups, and interracial couples are the norm. It is unfortunate that this couple was harassed and the man beaten. Although not everyone shares the same perspectives, we all need to be tolerant and respect one another despite our differences. Each person has the right to be with whomever they choose regardless of race and ethnicity. Embrace new perspectives and different ideas. “The open-minded see the truth in different things; the narrow-minded see only the differences”.

I believe that in our 21st universe, racism still exits in many areas/countries that is considered a developing area/countries. However, I have never thought that racism would still reach out to violence. Today, part of education (history, humanity, people's rights) is based on racism, which may not take place in developing countries. It is astonishing to hear about this since for the past decade or more racism has been taken very seriously by everyone.

I believe that racism still exists in our 21st century. Undeveloped countries have a much higher rate in racism due to lack of well educated youth. Nevertheless, this case is absolutely not acceptable and should be taken seriously by society. In my perspective, our youth/adults education should be more focused on courses concerning racism and its history.

Incredible, very sad to see how racism of this type still exist! I feel that is a mixture of racism and jelousy from ignorant individuals that are stock with prejudiced feelings. Instead they should educate themselves and learn about different cultures and diversity. My message to those indivuals that comited this horrible act, is to grow up and to learned to be open minded and diverse!

Being in a mixed relationship can be rough but I don’t think people should discriminated against interracial couple because everyone has their own choice to choose whoever they want to be with and it should not be based on color or race because diversity is a mixed of race . In this century, people should really get past this racism against interracial couples. After all we are all human, there is no race that is superior than another, and this concept that a black or a white race shouldn’t be mixed is somewhat ignorant. Overall, if we stop seeing the world as “black and white” then there will be less racism and people will be less judgmental and hopefully they will be open minded and come to acceptance. I, personally against racism .

I understand that despite all our advances there are unfortunately still prejudices that exist, but I am nonetheless shocked that it was taken to such a violent extreme. Realistically it will take a while for the prejudices of the past to be completely erased, if they ever are, but nowadays it had seemed as though we were beginning to, I guess not.

Wow, I have to say this is a very disappointing thing to read. In this day and age, when we are fighting for the equality of even homosexual couples, to hear that something that this is still happening...it makes you think what all this "advancement" is for if we are going to be so behind in mentality.

I am appalled at what I have read. Attacking innocent people for dating and being of different races? This is unacceptable and very disturbing. America is made up of many different races and nationalities. Eventually people are bound to mix. We are supposed to be people of the future, but with racist issues like this, acting out in violence, this just sets us way back. Being an African American myself, I am just disgusted by the violent event. Many minorities say that white people are really racist and do unspeakable things, but, when issues like this occur, what does that say about us. Some already think that the black community is really violent. This just adds to more misconception. What these guys did is really horrible, and I pray that justice is severed.

I think it's repulsive that this kind of hate crime still exists in this day and age. Couples should not have to live in fear because of potential hate provoked by racism. Racism awareness should be brought to the public's attention to prevent such crimes from happening. In addition, penalties should be very costly for hate crimes so that if such thoughts go through someone's mind they'll think twice and be less likely to commit it. Peace & Love!

As bad as this is, it does not surprise me. Racism has always been around and even though it is getting better with time, it still exists. This instance however is an extreme case. I do not in anyway condone nor agree with what happened and believe that the perpetrators should be punished to the full extent. Cases like this are not uncommon. Racist acts occur everuday so it comes as no surprise when i hear about them.

I am not surprised with this incident. thpugh it is very sad i never once thought something like this could never happen. Racism is still a major part of our society though it has gotton better over time it is still in play. the incident is very sad and the perpotrators should be prosecuted to the full extent but at the same time it is not surprising. i say to all bi-racial couples, just stay strong and know that time changes all.

I know racism still exists but I never thought to the degree of beating someone up for being an interracial couple. We need to be more aware about racism so we can stand up together against it and educate the younger generation that it is unacceptable.

It is so sick how people can be so cruel. We all have the freedom to date and marry whom ever we please. I still don't understand how society feels like they are entitled to approve or disapprove who should be together. Clearly two people that are together and are from different races love one another past the color lines. Color and race do not play a factor to them and it should not to us either. We should be able to respect and accept others for who they are. We need to open ourselves to want to learn more about people that are different from us. It is the only way we will grow as individuals and as a community.

After reading this short article and watching the video of the news reporters and hearing the victim's girlfriend speak, I am saddened. She mentioned something like "I know we're in the South and everything..." which shows that even in the 21st century, racism is a VERY serious problem that is still occurring and although in many places racism is not being spoken about or people are not being as "bold" with it as the past, it is still happening! I believe that no matter the color of your skin, you are a human and you have a choice to date whomever you feel and should not be targeted for any reason whatsoever. Everyone should be seen as equal and should just leave persons to make their own decisions about their personal lives in regards to relationships. Something that also triggered my attention was the news reporter stating that in Georgia there is no law for hate crimes and although the police said that there are federal laws, if enough "evidence" is not compiled then basically justice would not be served for the victim. We have come so far in regards to racism because it was worst in the times of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King etc.,(God bless their souls) but even today as we have recently just re-elected the first African American president of the United States, people are being disrespectful and displaying hate towards him and his family simply because of their color. I think that although the United States has come a long way in minimizing racism, there is still a lot more to be done and change must first occur with the people. It is time for everyone to stop hating one another because of the color of their skin, we are all human beings. Also, I think that EVERY state should seek to have laws AGAINST hate crimes and strict penalties for wrongdoers or these types of crimes will continue.

It's incredible to see that this kind of thing is still happening. This proves that racism works both ways and that it isn't just whites hating blacks. it doesn't make sense for someone to be harassed because they are dating someone who is not of the same ethnic background as them. It shows that we, as a society, still have a lot of work to do because this kind of thing shouldnt be ha[ppening in today's world.

It it astounding how a lack of education can cause people to do the most outrageous things. This incident is in no way personal, but leaves me with a sick feeling in my gut. It's incredible how now the tables have turned for these specific individuals. It is disappointing and disgusting, but it proves we need to acknowledge this issue as a society, and that it is still not at rest.

It's incredible to see that racism still exsists. And this proves that racism is a two way street. Blacks can be just as racist as whites. It's ridiculous though that we are still dealing with this with all we have accomplished in our society. I feel like to really move forward, we have to settle our differences and become one.

It is very scary that racism is still prevelant and even scarier that physical violence is intertwined with racism. It is one thing to use verbal violence but to go as far as physically abusing someone because of a choice they should have full control over is absurd. This couple's choice to be in a relationship should not have anything to do with anybody especially with a couple of men standing by the roadside. We live in a world with so many different beautiful cultures and races and in these times this nonsense should not be continuing. Racism should have never been an issue as we all have one thing in common, we are all human beings. Racism has been around for too long and it is only destroying us. Shame on these men for commiting this crime and shame on people who are racists.

Honestly, I cannot say i see racism in my everyday life. Its shocking to me that it is still happening though we may joke and stereotype based on racial profiling it. It is not a joking matter if this day and age people are experiencing racism to that extreme extent or at any extent from that matter, our society has a long way to go and grow from ignorance and naivety.

I still believe that racism exists today in society. And that sometimes people need to move on and accept adversity and diversity. Things are different now in the U.S. and people are more accepting of change than others. I don't think that was right for those 3 black men to beat on that white man for just dating a black woman. Come on now. Spanish people date black. White date black. Asian date black. Love and chemistry doesn't have a color or race. It's just 2 humans joining together and creating a bond.

It's really sad that racism still exists in our country after all that has been fought for to take this away. Everyone has their own choice to chose who to be with, whether you are black or white it doesn't matter! I hope that one day racism can be gone for good!
