Club closes because of suspected gang bangers

Well it seems a club in Boston that was hosting a party for Harvard and Yale alums this weekend, was closed because there was a line of African Americans waiting to get in and someone from the club's management said to have seen "local gang bangers" outside. But there weren't any gang bangers, just Harvard and Yale alums. You can read more about this incident below, source is below with the full story.

A party for black Harvard and Yale alums at a Boston club this weekend was shut down just after 11pm. Why? The club owner was concerned that a long line of black people outside would make the club look bad.

A group of recent graduates had sold tickets in advance for a party at a new Boston club, Cure, to follow Saturday's Harvard-Yale game. By 10:30pm, though, club management freaked out and claimed it had seen "local gang bangers" around, despite the strict guest-list policy implemented by organizers. At first they demanded that guests show student ID — not exactly practical given the fact that it was a party aimed at alums — and then eventually shut down the entire club.

"We were perceived as a threat because of our skin color," wrote one organizer, Michael Beal, in the email below. "I am further dismayed that after having spent the last few hours with the club owner, I do not believe him to be a racist; which only adds to my consternation around what this event says about race relations in our country."

Racist woman assaults mailman

A USPS letter carrier named Hugson Jean was fired after this incident where a white woman used a racial slur and assaulted him. This is just insane how he got fired for this after staying calm as this lady went off on him.

Acid attack was a lie

If you haven't heard yet about this story, well here goes. A Vancouver, Washington woman named Bethany Storro, said an African-American woman threw a cup of acid on her face at a Starbucks which of course left her face scarred. She said the African-American woman said, "Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" But as it turns out it was a hoax, she lied about everything, she threw acid on her own face. Why would you do this to yourself? Does she hate a race so much to permanently scar her own face? I don't think she should be allowed in public, she needs some serious help.

Storro was rushed to the hospital with second-degree burns. The community rallied around her, raising thousands of dollars in donations and demanding that police find the assailant in this bizarre case. Yet police had no leads, and could find no evidence of Storro’s attacker. After several weeks of fruitless investigation Storro admitted that it was all a hoax; she had thrown acid on herself.

By then the damage has been done—not only to Storro's credibility, and to the trust of her friends, family and supporters—but also to race relations. Commenters on white power Web sites jumped onto Storro's tragic story, viewing it through a racist prism: "This is a hate crime. Hang the baboon from a tree," one poster demanded. Another replied, "An eye for an eye I say. It is clear that this was done out of jealousy (most of these black on white crimes are about jealousy) because this lovely white girl was better looking and more intelligent than this inferior and worthless female afro-bozo."

Ironically, Storro had been slated to appear on Oprah to discuss her attack ("to inspire people and tell them about Jesus" she said), but cancelled abruptly once questions were raised about her story.

When looking for someone to accuse of crimes, hoaxers often exploit society's racist notions of who would be likely to commit the crime against the "victim." The news regularly reports on people who fake diseases, rapes, robberies, abductions, suicides, and crimes of all variety. When the hoax fans the flames of hatred, it is all the more reprehensible.

White couple won't sell home to African-American couple

The co-host of the Michael Baisden show filed for $100 million discrimination lawsuit against a white couple who won't sell their home to George Wilborn and his wife because they are African-American. Read more about it below.

George Wilborn, the famed co-host of the popular Michael Baisden Show, has filed a $100 million lawsuit against a Chicago couple who refused to sell him a home because of the color of his skin.

As previously reported, Wilborn and his wife were attempting to buy a $1.7 million home from Daniel and Adrienne Sabbia, a white couple.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development filed a complaint on behalf of Wilborn however after an investigator told them that Daniel Sabba declined to sign the contract because he'd "rather not sell to an African American."

Now Wilborn and his wife Peytyn have officially filed a $100 million lawsuit in federal court for the discrimination they faced trying to buy the five-bedroom home in the city's Bridgeport neighborhood.

This is just disgusting to hear about. I can't believe stuff like this still happens in the year 2010.

White cop punches black girl in face

Is this another incident of a white racist cop thinking he is above the law? Maybe it's just police brutality? Or was it just a police officer doing his job? A white Seattle cop punches a black woman, watch the video below. Apparently the two black women were stopped for jay walking.

Racist Harvard Law student emailer

Well if you haven't yet heard about the Harvard Law School student, Stephanie Grace, who had a conversation about race at a dinner and then sent out the racist email basically trying to prove that African Americans are not as intelligent than whites, here's the info and links to other sites who have talked about this incident.

Here's a copy of the email she sent (I found this on feministe.us blog):

... I just hate leaving things where I feel I misstated my position.

I absolutely do not rule out the possibility that African Americans are, on average, genetically predisposed to be less intelligent. I could also obviously be convinced that by controlling for the right variables, we would see that they are, in fact, as intelligent as white people under the same circumstances. The fact is, some things are genetic. African Americans tend to have darker skin. Irish people are more likely to have red hair. (Now on to the more controversial:) Women tend to perform less well in math due at least in part to prenatal levels of testosterone, which also account for variations in mathematics performance within genders. This suggests to me that some part of intelligence is genetic, just like identical twins raised apart tend to have very similar IQs and just like I think my babies will be geniuses and beautiful individuals whether I raise them or give them to an orphanage in Nigeria. I don’t think it is that controversial of an opinion to say I think it is at least possible that African Americans are less intelligent on a genetic level, and I didn't mean to shy away from that opinion at dinner.

I also don’t think that there are no cultural differences or that cultural differences are not likely the most important sources of disparate test scores (statistically, the measurable ones like income do account for some raw differences). I would just like some scientific data to disprove the genetic position, and it is often hard given difficult to quantify cultural aspects. One example (courtesy of Randall Kennedy) is that some people, based on crime statistics, might think African Americans are genetically more likely to be violent, since income and other statistics cannot close the racial gap. In the slavery era, however, the stereotype was of a docile, childlike, African American, and they were, in fact, responsible for very little violence (which was why the handful of rebellions seriously shook white people up). Obviously group wide rates of violence could not fluctuate so dramatically in ten generations if the cause was genetic, and so although there are no quantifiable data currently available to "explain" away the racial discrepancy in violent crimes, it must be some nongenetic cultural shift. Of course, there are pro-genetic counterarguments, but if we assume we can control for all variables in the given time periods, the form of the argument is compelling.

In conclusion, I think it is bad science to disagree with a conclusion in your heart, and then try (unsuccessfully, so far at least) to find data that will confirm what you want to be true. Everyone wants someone to take 100 white infants and 100 African American ones and raise them in Disney utopia and prove once and for all that we are all equal on every dimension, or at least the really important ones like intelligence. I am merely not 100% convinced that this is the case.

Please don't pull a Larry Summers on me,

Stephanie Grace

Other sites have talked about it with more detail than I'm going to:

I am in agreement with feministe.us Jill's blog post about this incident. It seems her post was closed for comments. If anyone has views on this incident feel free to post a comment here. It's pretty sad that a person who may be a lawyer or working with the law in some way in the future has these views but I bet there are many more.

Gender equality in a corporate workplace

This blog is about racism in the world but I felt compelled to share this. I watched an online video recently that had an open forum with business leaders from around the world to discuss the gender parity in the corporate workplace. It's a long video but well worth the time to watch. Leave comments on what you think.

Companies perform better if their female talent is equally integrated, but a decade of data reflects only marginal change in this area. How can we move beyond awareness towards action? In partnership with the World Economic Forum, CNBC hosts this debate focusing on gender parity.

Racist announcement at Walmart store

Apparently at a Walmart store in Washington Township, in southern New Jersey, someone got on the public-address system Sunday evening and said, "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now." You can read more about it on Yahoo.

Shoppers in the store at the time said a manager quickly got on the public-address system and apologized for the remark. And while it was unclear whether a rogue patron or an employee was responsible for the comment, many customers expressed their anger to store management.

"I want to know why such statements are being made, because it flies in the face of what we teach our children about tolerance for all," said Sheila Ellington, who was in the store at the time with a friend. "If this was meant to be a prank, there's only one person laughing, and it's not either one of us."

Ellington, of Monroe, and her friend Patricia Covington said they plan to boycott the retailer until they're assured the issue has been addressed so it doesn't happen again.

The pair said they were stunned when they heard the announcement and initially believed they had misheard it. But once the words sank in, they grew angry.

Racism as a mental issue people have?

An article from The Famuan Online asks the question if racism is a mental disorder. If you read the article let us know your thoughts. I'm not really believing that racism is a mental disorder but I'm also no doctor.

Recently, some psychiatrists argue that the notion deserves a second look. "To continue perceiving extreme racism as normative and not pathologic is to lend it legitimacy. Clearly, anyone who scapegoats a whole group of people and seeks to eliminate them to resolve his or her internal conflicts meets criteria for a delusional disorder, a major psychiatric illness,” said Alvin F. Poussaint, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard University.

The manual also goes on to say that in order for a syndrome to be classified as a mental illness it must be considered a manifestation of a behavioral, psychological, or biological dysfunction in the individual. Neither deviant behavior nor conflicts that are primarily between the individual and society are mental disorders unless the deviance or conflict is a symptom of a dysfunction in the individual."
